Wiccan Marvel: Joe Locke’s Groundbreaking Reveal in Agatha All Along

Posted by

The fifth episode of Agatha All Along culminated in a momentous scene that solidified a long-held theory among queer fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Joe Locke, who initially appeared as a character referred to simply as “Teen,” has been confirmed as the beloved gay character Wiccan, also known as Billy Kaplan, a.k.a. Billy Maximoff—the twin son of Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff.

This thrilling revelation had been the subject of fervent speculation, rumors, and heated debates, especially given the prolonged ambiguity surrounding Locke’s character. Some fans even posited that the Heartstopper star could portray Agatha Harkness’ son, Nicholas Scratch.

In a pivotal scene toward the episode’s conclusion, Teen calls out Nicholas Scratch’s name to capture Agatha Harkness’ attention. However, after Agatha mocks him by saying he’s “just like his mother,” she falls into a mud trap. In a dramatic turn, Teen unleashes a blast, sending Lilia and Jen down into the trap alongside Agatha.

As the camera zooms out, Locke’s character is revealed wearing a blue crown reminiscent of the Scarlet Witch’s, underscoring his connection to Wanda. The episode’s soundtrack features the electrifying pop anthem “You Should See Me in a Crown” by Billie Eilish, further amplifying the excitement for queer fans of the MCU.

In Marvel Comics, the Scarlet Witch has two children: the twins William “Billy” Maximoff and Thomas “Tommy” Shepherd. While the MCU has introduced twins, they were portrayed as far too young to exhibit their powers or identities fully. However, as the characters grow, Billy evolves into the superhero Wiccan Marvel, while Tommy becomes the superhero Speed.

Billy, now confirmed to be portrayed by Joe Locke, is not only Scarlet Witch’s son but also a pivotal figure in the Young Avengers, representing LGBTQ+ representation within the Marvel universe, as highlighted by Comic Book Resources.

As the Young Avengers unite to form their superhero team, Wiccan encounters Hulkling (Teddy Altman), and the two eventually embark on a romantic journey, becoming one of Marvel’s most prominent LGBTQ+ couples. Throughout various comic timelines, their relationship evolves as they date, get engaged, and ultimately marry—all while engaging in thrilling adventures as Young Avengers.

While it remains uncertain when or how Billy/Wiccan’s twin brother, Tommy/Speed, will make his MCU debut, and even more unclear if Hulkling will enter the cinematic realm soon, fans are still basking in the excitement of Wiccan’s introduction in Agatha All Along. The fact that Joe Locke embodies such an iconic queer superhero is a cause for celebration, and fans can’t help but stand in admiration!
