Ukraine Strikes Moscow with Major Drone Attack Amid Kursk Offensive

Posted by

While Ukrainian troops continue to advance in Russia’s Kursk region, conducting probing raids on frontline towns and villages, Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow.

11 kamikaze drones, according to Russia’s defense ministry, were stopped before reaching the capital. Over the city of Podolsk, 24 miles south of Moscow and not far from the international airport of Domodedovo, several were shot down. After a loud explosion, residents heard a buzzing in the night sky.

The ministry claimed to have destroyed 45 drones over Russian territory, including six over the Belgorod region and 23 in the border region of Bryansk. Above Kursk province, where Ukraine launched a surprise invasion just over two weeks ago, two more were intercepted. Over Kaluga, three more were shot down. Others were seen in the northern Murmansk region, apparently on their way to a strategic bomber-occupied airfield.

Separately, Russian engineering equipment and a truck were destroyed by first-person-view drones.

The town of Sudzha was taken over by Ukrainian forces two weeks ago. They are getting close to capturing Korenovo, another urban settlement that had a population of 5,500 before the war. They are said to have reached the area to the north-east of it. They have also lost money.

To halt Kyiv’s advance, the Kremlin has moved some units from their bases in the occupied south of Ukraine to the frontline. The Kursk mini-invasion, the first attack on Russian soil since the second world war 80 years ago, has been minimized by the Kremlin as the work of “terrorists.”

Russian troops have continued to gain ground in the eastern Donetsk oblast of Ukraine despite Zelenskiy’s surprise attack. After reportedly capturing the town of Niu-York earlier this week, they reportedly took control of two additional villages, Komyshivka and Zhuravka. In the yard of an abandoned house, soldiers in Zhuravka took a video of themselves waving a Russian flag. They yelled, “Glory to Russia!”

The town of Myrnohrad is 3 miles (5 km) away from the frontline, and Pokrovsk, a military hub in Ukraine, is about 7 miles (11 km) away. Civilians have been urged to leave by authorities. Myrnohrad still has approximately 16,000 inhabitants. According to officials, some families were hiding their children to avoid being forced to evacuate.

“It’s a life of constant shelling. Perhaps without light and water. As a result, I appeal to the Myrnohrad community and residents: Don’t wait, “said Yury Tretyak, the acting mayor.

Since Russia took the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka in February, it has been making inroads in the eastern Donbas region. It uses harsh tactics that work. Strong guided bombs are dropped on Ukrainian positions by warplanes. After that, infantry in small groups advance in 24-hour sorties. There are a lot of dead people.

On Wednesday, Ukraine said that its military stopped more than 40 attacks by Russian forces that were trying to break through the front in Pokrovsk that day.

Ukrainian losses were not disclosed, though Kyiv claimed 238 Russian troops were killed or wounded in the attacks.
