Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old from North Carolina and a known supporter of Democratic causes, was arrested on Sunday following what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) described as an “apparent assassination attempt” against former President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump. The incident took place at Trump’s golf course in Florida, where Trump was in close proximity, reportedly only 300 to 500 yards away from the suspect at the time of the event.
Authorities responded quickly to the scene, recovering significant evidence, including an AK-47-style assault rifle equipped with a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro device. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed the discovery of these items during a news conference. The FBI is leading the investigation and is expected to press charges against Routh for the foiled attack.
Routh’s political leanings and background have raised further concerns, especially given his previous statements and actions. He had openly voiced his support for Democratic candidates, especially President Biden, and has been a vocal advocate for Ukraine, particularly since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war. In earlier interviews, Routh shared that he traveled to Kyiv to support the Ukrainian resistance. He claimed to have helped recruit individuals to participate in the fight against Russia, even tearfully pleading for others to join the cause.
Routh’s social media presence reveals a deep-seated animosity toward Trump. In a post from April 2024, Routh slammed Trump, stating, “Democracy is on the ballot, and we cannot afford to lose,” echoing a popular slogan used by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. He further accused Trump of trying to “enslave Americans under a master” and urged Biden to focus his reelection campaign on preserving America’s democratic values.
Though his political rhetoric may have seemed extreme to some, his arrest has shocked many, including his family. Routh’s son, Oran Routh, in an interview with CNN, expressed disbelief over his father’s involvement in the incident. “This doesn’t sound like the man I know. My father is a loving, hardworking, and caring person. It’s unlike him to do anything crazy or violent. I hope this is all a misunderstanding,” Oran commented, adding that the situation may have been “blown out of proportion.”
The arrest comes just two months after a previous assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, during a campaign rally. In that incident, Trump was injured after being shot in the ear, but he quickly recovered and returned to the campaign trail. These recent incidents have raised serious concerns about security for presidential candidates as the 2024 election cycle heats up, with some calling for heightened protection measures.
Routh’s background reveals a complicated man. He attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and later moved to Hawaii around 2018. Before his political alignment shifted more drastically, Routh reportedly supported candidates like Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley, encouraging them to stay in the race despite deciding to drop out. In one of his posts, he urged, “You must fight. Keep giving speeches and push all the way to Election Day, no matter the outcome. Never give up.”
While Routh’s motivations for the apparent assassination attempt are still under investigation, his combination of political fervor, global involvement in Ukraine, and strong opposition to Trump raises important questions about the intersection of personal belief systems and violent action in contemporary politics. As the investigation unfolds, the story of Ryan Wesley Routh will likely continue to make headlines, illuminating both the polarizing effects of modern political discourse and the potential dangers of unchecked extremism.
